The Palisades vineyard from which this wine is made lies in its own valley east of Calistoga and comes replete with a history going back pre-prohibition. Mostly planted to infamous old vines of Petite Sirah, its owners are fanatical (in all the right ways) about the farming of this historic site. Fermented quickly to aid intensity, this wine then spent 18 months in mostly old French barrels. The finished wine is best described as ‘full throttle’ – about as rich, intense and black as it can be. The palate is packed full of black fruits, tar and unsmoked tobacco. This should drink well on release as long as it is given air or time in a decanter, but will age for 15 years or more without breaking a sweat.
