The name Clos du Ciel, French for “wall-enclosed vineyard of the sky,” is a metaphor for the rare microclimate enjoyed by this vineyard site. Situated between 1,275 and 1,400 feet above sea level, with a gentle mountain slope, this vineyard enjoys strong sun exposure across the patchwork of silt and volcanic gravels, which gives polished tannins, body and hints of graphite-mineral. Clos du Ciel has the most masculine structure of our trio of Pinot Noir vineyards. The wine is aged for 16 months in a balance of new and old French Oak, bringing elegance, softness and a silky texture to this wonderful wine.
2016 was near perfect. Overall slightly cooler than average, it started early with a warm, dry spring and just enough rain to meet the vineyard’s needs. A long Indian summer gave us excellent ripening and flavour development. Moderate temperatures at harvest allowed gradual picking as each block achieved perfection, yielding a bountiful crop with excellent flavour development and slightly lower potential alcohol. The vintage produced delicate, classically styled wines with firm acidity and bright fruit. Offering elegance, complexity, richness and long-term ageability, the 2016 Clos du Ciel is an exceptional wine. The nose is filled with aromas of raspberry liqueur, black cherry, strawberry, black truffle, blackberry, and leather. Balanced and rich in the mouth, the notes of red forest fruits, cloves, vanilla and violet are stunning. Earthy and gamey components complete the intense mouth feel. The texture is sensual, silky and stylish with impressive length. The 2016 vintage will continue to improve and develop for two decades or more. 92 points - Wine Spectator
