Located just west of the heart of the Russian River Valley, Walker Vine Hill is surrounded by Pinot noir and Chardonnay. The secret of the vineyard seems to be the small hills on three compass points that form a bowl opened toward the east. This shelters the property from some of the cool air of the Russian River, raising the temperatures enough throughout the season to produce a wine with a core of blue fruit. Nearly two years in oak softens and adds complexity and the final blend is driven by an extremely seductive nose with chocolate covered blueberries, red currants, and clove unfolding on the nose. The palate is densely constructed with velvety tannins and a long, full finish.
The last vintage of Walker Vine Hill is the final step in its long journey with Donelan Family Wines. This bittersweet ending finishes on an incredibly high note, leaving no cliffhangers. Years of identifying variations within the site – even sections as small as 2 rows – came to an epic conclusion in the 2013 vintage, with the segmentation of 14 distinct lots. Like variations on a theme, these lots were separated based on vigor, vine-age, fruit intensity and ripeness, and then vinified with a variety of practices, ranging from fully destemmed to 100% whole-cluster, a range of new oak percentages per lot, and varying lengths of macerations. The final blend is driven by an extremely seductive nose with chocolate covered blueberries, red currants, and clove unfolding on the nose. The palate is densely constructed with velvety tannins and a long, full finish. We are extremely pleased to offer the 2013 Walker Vine Hill Syrah, the farewell tour for this rock star wine.
