The Cabernet for this wine comes from Tierra Roja, a small, four acre jewel of a hillside vineyard in the Oakville AVA. Surrounded by iconic names including Backus, Screaming Eagle, Maya and Rudd, the vineyard is dotted with big rocks, and the soil is definitely roja (very red). This very perfumed, dark, and complex wine comes from the upper steep terraces of the vineyard, directly below Dalla Valle. The addition of 5% Cabernet Franc from one of Oakville’s premier vineyards adds structure and makes the wine a fond homage to its neighbor Maja.
2015 was a drought year, requiring extremely close attention to each and every vine in order to allow them to survive and show their quality. Some blocks of the Tierra Roja vineyard suffered 45% losses, and those berries that did set were much smaller than usual. However, from this struggle for survival came extraordinary quality. The profile of the 2015 Oakville Hillside Cabernet is one of mixed red and black fruits along with the great spine of acidity provided by the red soils of the Eastern hillsides. A medium weight wine bursting with black cherry, currants, cedar and sweet/ripe tannins, the tremendous balance on this Cabernet shows everything that you could want for a long graceful evolution.
