L’Esprit des Pavots literally means “The Spirit of the Poppies.” First produced in the 2001 vintage, the wine was sourced from the younger vines on the Peter Michael Estate. As the vineyard matured, “L’Esprit” has evolved into a more typically Californian expression of the Les Pavots vineyard’s terroir. Affectionately referred to as Les Pavots’ little brother, the blend for L’Esprit is a bit more free-form than Les Pavots, varying more from vintage to vintage. As of 2016 selected lots from the Au Paradis vineyard in Oakville were introduced to the blend, signalling the next evolution in the life of the L'Esprit wine.
2016 was near perfect. Overall slightly cooler than average, it started early with a warm, dry spring and just enough rain to meet the vineyard’s needs. A long Indian summer gave us excellent ripening and flavour development. Moderate temperatures at harvest allowed gradual picking as each block achieved perfection, yielding a bountiful crop of Bordeaux varietals and wines of uncommon depth and concentration. Generously rich, the wine is a beautiful blending of the Les Pavots and Au Paradis terroirs with strong notes of blueberry, chocolate, cedar, coffee, vanilla bean and black truffle. Subtle accents of black cherry, blackcurrant, plum, leather, tobacco and white pepper complete the complex bouquet. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, exhibiting savory elements with abundant, supple tannins and a lingering finish. Fruit forward and enjoyable at release, this wine should age gracefully for fifteen years or more.
