While Alexana Estate is now focused on its exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling, a few years ago, head winemaker Brian Weil crafted a special series of wines from grapes he sourced from the Columbia Valley in Washington. The Lonesome Spring Ranch, situated where the Columbia Valley meets the desert and mountains, offers a fascinating terroir—and the results are nothing short of excellent.
The 2017 'Gran Rouge' Red Wine is a Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre blend that delivers expressive smoky pepper, ripe raspberry, and grilled herb flavors, finishing with medium-grained tannins, all wrapped up in eighteen months of oak. Due to Alexana's focus on its core varietals, the GSM wines have remained at the back of their cellar since bottling, allowing them to age perfectly. While it’s matured to perfection, this wine is ready to be enjoyed right now—though it will happily sit in the cellar for a few more years if you prefer.
